How Eve decides
Every verdict on Eve is a word over an exact number from its engine (Showdown's own damage calc and stat formulas). These are the rules that turn numbers into words.
Verdict words
Every attack does one of 16 random damage amounts (rolls). A verdict counts the rolls. Safe starts at 15/16: one unlucky high roll is accepted. The spread optimiser uses the same line.
| Check | Word | Rule over the engine result |
|---|---|---|
| Survive a hit | survives at least 15 of 16 rolls | |
| survives 1–14 of 16 rolls | ||
| survives 0 of 16 rolls | ||
| Knock out | green for yours, red for theirs | knocks out in at least 15 of 16 rolls |
| knocks out in 1–14 of 16 rolls | ||
| knocks out in 0 of 16 rolls | ||
| Speed | moves first: higher priority, or faster (slower under Trick Room) | |
| same Speed, or the possible Speeds overlap because their spread is assumed | ||
| moves second | ||
| Team | one of your Pokémon wins the one-on-one against it | |
| none of your Pokémon wins the one-on-one | ||
| Spread | reachable only by lowering a stat you kept | |
| no legal spread survives it in 15 of 16 rolls | ||
| Review moment | the turn swung the game your way | |
| the turn swung the game against you | ||
| a game you lost, and you started this turn with 1 Pokémon against 2 or more |
- When the count is not 16/16 or 0/16, the chip shows it, in Simple too: .
- Simple shows whole percentages rounded outward, never in your favour: 237.4–280.0% becomes 237–280%. Full shows one decimal and the roll count.
- Moves that can miss or hit several times use the engine's KO probability, shown as the nearest count out of 16 that stays inside its band.
- Green, amber and red only ever mean a verdict. Blue means you and purple means them.
Who moves first
- Higher move priority goes first, whatever the Speed. Within the same priority, the higher Speed goes first; under Trick Room, the lower.
- May tie: the Speeds are equal (a coin flip), or the opponent's Speed is a range because their spread is assumed and the ranges overlap.
- Speeds come from the engine's stat formula with items, abilities and field (Tailwind, Choice Scarf, paralysis) applied.
What “answered” means
A threat is answered when one of your Pokémon wins the one-on-one against it. Eve checks the 12 most-used Pokémon this way.
- Both sides use their most damaging move into the other. Eve counts the hits each side needs: 1, 2, or 3 or more.
- A knockout counts when it is more likely than not (50% of rolls or more). Two-hit knockouts count items between the hits (Sitrus Berry, Leftovers), and Focus Sash and Sturdy.
- Your Pokémon wins when it knocks the threat out in at most 2 hits and, if it is faster, needs no more hits than the threat; if it is slower, fewer.
- Priority moves, switching and the partner are not part of this check. It is a one-on-one screen, not a game simulation.
Which threats Eve checks
- Benchmarks for one Pokémon: the 30 most-used Pokémon of the current regulation, by Smogon ladder usage at rating ≥1760.
- Answers: the top 12 on the Team page; the top 30 by default on What people play. Speed, Tailwind and Trick Room checks: the top 20. A Trick Room warning needs the threats that would move first to carry at least 15% of that usage.
- Their set: item, ability, moves and nature from tournament team sheets of the last 60 days when there are at least 20; otherwise the most common on the Smogon ladder. The spread is the ladder's most common one for that nature, because team sheets don't list spreads.
- A Helping Hand partner is counted when Eve estimates that at least 50% of the threat's teams bring one.
When Eve proposes a change
- A spread is proposed only if at least one verdict gets better (for example KO'd becomes Safe) and none gets worse.
- Proposals are ranked by how much the threat they fix is used, and at most 3 are shown by default.
- Every proposal shows its cost (): the stats that go down and any goal it gives up. means no legal spread reaches Safe; a teammate or a play has to cover it.
- Nothing changes until you click Apply, and Undo is one click. Spreads you set yourself are never touched.
Stat points (SP)
Pokémon Champions replaces EVs with stat points: 66 in total, at most 32 in one stat. IVs are fixed at 31 and the level is 50.
- HP = base + SP + 75. Garchomp: 108 + 32 + 75 = 215.
- Other stats = floor((base + SP + 20) × nature), where the nature is ×1.1, ×1 or ×0.9. Garchomp's Speed with 32 SP: 154 neutral, 169 with a Speed-raising nature.
- Scarlet/Violet EV pastes are converted: SP = 0 below 4 EVs, otherwise floor((EV − 4) / 8) + 1, at most 32. For example 0 EV → 0 SP, 4 EV → 1 SP, 12 EV → 2 SP, 252 EV → 32 SP. Converted spreads are marked.
- Where a spread came from is always shown: their spread (published with the team), converted spread (from Scarlet/Violet EVs), usual spread (the ladder’s most common, used when a team sheet has none), no spread listed (the source lists none), your spread (set by you).
Game review
- The turning point is the turn where the difference in team HP moved most against you.
- Key moments (at most 3): a swing your way, a swing against you, a lost game where you started the turn with 1 Pokémon against 2 or more.
- Eve says a move “would have” worked only when the speed order, with priority, puts it before the faint or the threat. A turn that swung your way is never called a mistake.
- Alternatives are one-turn checks: Eve doesn't predict how the opponent would have replied.
What Eve doesn’t model
- Every check is one turn. Eve doesn't search multi-turn lines.
- Team checks don't model priority moves, switching or the partner.
- Opponents' spreads are assumed (the ladder's most common) until a battle shows otherwise.
- When Eve can't check something, it says nothing rather than guess.
Data and sources
- Game data (species, moves, items, abilities, learnsets, legality): Pokémon Showdown at commit 4f113a6c4a75, synced 16 Oct 2026.
- Damage:
@smogon/calc0.12.0, Champions generation. Eve validates every set first, because the calc silently ignores illegal items. - Smogon usage: loading…
- Tournament teams: open team sheets from Limitless (no spreads), and full spreads from pokepast.es pastes. Each team keeps its source link, date and regulation.
Regulation
Reg M-C: The current rule set, 9 Sep – 2 Dec 2026: which Pokémon, items and Megas are allowed. Pokémon legal in M-B stay legal.
